Invisible Carers in the UK.
Here in the UK, 1 in 8 adults is a carer with around 700,000 young people taking on caring responsibilities. Now more than ever, they need recognition and support.
Since we are back in lockdown and following further restrictions, carer’s face many more challenges. While needing to take care of themselves they are under pressure to do so for the ones they care for as many services are put on pause during the lockdown.
The stress and pressure of it all can be difficult to cope with. It is important to know that carers are not forgotten, there are a number of amazing supportive networks and organisations within the UK ready to offer help where ever they can:
- MyTime – Organises online meetups for carers to come, talk and unwind
- Carers UK – Offers support and guidance to the unpaid carers in the UK
- Carers Trust – Fights tirelessly to raise awareness of unpaid carers in the UK
While many may be unsure as to what an invisible/unpaid carer is, we thought we would do our part in raising awareness of these amazing people.
What is an invisible carer?
There isn’t a set job description as this is an unpaid role. An invisible carer could be a partner, parent, family member, friend, or even a neighbor. They can be temporary or permanently caring for someone who has an illness, disability, or simply has care needs.
What is it they do?
They can provide various types of care and support. It can range from supporting someone with shopping, going to the bank, cooking, bathing, etc. They generally help someone to be as independent, healthy, and comfortable in their own home.
Here’s to you, our unsung hero’s, our brave and mighty, our invisible carer. Thank you for all the amazing work you do in helping improve the lives of many.
