‘’Understanding people’s real experiences of living with a disability and their views on what needs to change are essential if we are to truly change the landscape for disabled people.’’
– Justin Tomlinson, Minister for Disabled People
On the 15th of January 2021, the government launched a public survey open to those with disabilities, their family members, Carers, and charitable organisations. The sole goal is to understand and gather the experiences disabled people have had in this country and how national strategy can better improve their life.
Despite the challenges we face with COVID-19, the government is committed to delivering a national strategy for disabled people, and at its heart will be their statements and lived experiences.
The Aim:
The aim of the survey is to help the government understand the barriers that disabled people face and what they (our elected leaders) need to focus on improving.
The government wants to lead a structured conversation to hear about people’s daily lives. The hope is to be able to remove and challenge unhelpful perceptions to enact a positive change.
UK Disability Survey:
The survey went live on January 15th, 2021, and will stay open until the 23rd of April 2021. The important thing to note is that the responses received before February 13th will be the ones that inform the national strategy.
The responses received between the 13th of February and the 23rd of April will still be accepted but will guide in the national strategies delivery.
How long will it take?
The survey can take between 20 – 30 minutes to complete.
How have they made the survey accessible?
The survey is available in:
- Braille
- British Sign Language (BSL)
- Easy Read
- The Welsh language
Is there anything I should know?
