Remember Captain Tom Moore?
Back in March, Captain Tom Moore committed to walking 100 laps of his own garden before his 100th birthday in April. He was doing this to help raise money for our brave NHS workers who were and still are battling with COVID-19.
Tom’s heart and determination caught the attention of those all over the UK and further afield. To date, he has been able to raise over £38 million for our healthcare workers.
Since April of 2020, Toms turned 100, been Knighted by the Queen, announced the coming of 2 books, and if that wasn’t enough, he has started his own podcast to help tackle the loneliness in the elderly which will ultimately help their mental health.
Tom’s podcast, ‘’The Originals’’ is solely focused on tackling the growing loneliness amongst the elderly especially since the hit of COVID-19.
Tom’s aim is to inspire people to ‘’Donate Your Words’’ and have a meaningful conversation with an older person.
My next mission is just as important as my last.
Tom has teamed with Age UK and Cadbury to encourage everyone to start a conversation with an older person in their community.
We older people are the originals and we have more in common than you may think. You name it, we’ve done it.
There are 100’s of amazing stories just waiting to be told.
To kick start the conversation, Tom created The Originals and has already interviewed some fascinating people.
People like Mary Telford shares all about a kiss with Elvis Presley or Winston Garvey an 83-year-old bodybuilder.
There are so many more added to his podcast on a regular basis for you to listen to here.
With tomorrow being International Mental Health Day and many of our elderly stuck back into further isolation. Donate your words and start a conversation with them today.
The Importance of Mental Health:
In a nutshell, our mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It can affect our mood, how we think and act. Our mental health can help determine how we handle situations such as stress, how we relate to others, and the choices we make.
What Can Affect Our Mental Health?
- Living alone
- Poor physical health
- Difficulty socializing
- Bereavement
- Lack of sleep and many more
According to Age UK, 225,000 of the elderly in our community typically go for a week without talking to anyone. Imagine the impact that can have on your mental health.
More than 6 million older people say that just a few minutes of conversation makes a world of difference.
We are hearing through our advice lines that since the outbreak many older people are feeling anxious, depressed and lonely.
– Laurie Boult Age UK
The effects of loneliness can be devastating to a person’s mental health. Due to COVID-19, it has been even more difficult for older people to stay connected, especially if they live on their own.
