The UK’s Hero Captain Tom Moore Has Done It Again!
Since we’ve started following Captain Tom’s Journey, we have seen him complete his 100 laps for the NHS, celebrating his 100th birthday, be knighted by the Queen, published 2 books, and start his own podcast where he focuses on the mental health of the elderly in the UK.
The great thing about Captain Moore is the fact that he has captured all of our hearts with all 3 of his big campaigns. Proof of this was with the BBC’s fireworks display on New Year’s Eve where there was a 10-minute show that used 300 drones to paint the sky with tributes to the NHS staff and notable figures from 2020. Notable figures just like our very own Captain Tom.
For those of you who are not familiar with Captain Tom. Below we have a quick snapshot of his amazing deeds of 2020 and what he has brought with him into 2021.
100 Laps For His 100th Birthday:
Back in March 2020 when COVID-19 was wreaking havoc for the first time, Captain Moore committed to walking 100 laps of his own garden for his 100th birthday in April. This was all in aid of supporting our amazing NHS workers for their heroic work.
Tom’s heart and determination caught the attention of many throughout the UK and abroad. To date, he has been able to raise over £38 million for our amazingly relentless healthcare workers.
The Originals Podcast:
In October 2020 we wrote about Tom’s next mission where he created his own podcast known as ‘The Original’s’’. Here his sole focus was to tackle the growing loneliness amongst the elderly in our community.
Captain Moore teamed up with Age UK and Cadbury for the ‘’Donate Your Words’’ Campaign. This campaign was created to help inspire people to have a meaningful conversation with an older person in their lives. Mental health is just as important as physical health and sometimes we can forget that.
It certainly got me thinking myself. I know my Grandmother fairly well but what about when she was my age? Since then, I have learned that she has left a few broken-hearted before settling down with my Grandfather, she worked as a seamstress, loved to jive with the best of them, and was an extremely dedicated night nurse in a nursing home.
I hope Tom’s Donate Your Words has inspired others to do the same because each story you hear is unique and there are only a handful of people who can share them.
Walk With Tom
Now it’s 2021, the year we couldn’t wait to come and I’m afraid to say that it isn’t the fresh start we were all hoping for. We are back in lockdown and once again need something to pick us up and dust us off for another fight against COVID-19.
Who better to be our champion than Captain Tom Moore with his new ‘’Walk With Tom’’ campaign.
‘’Let’s stand shoulder to shoulder (metaphorically!). Let’s try not to get downhearted, we will get through this. Let’s walk together to keep our spirits up and support those who are lonely’’
– Captain Tom Moore
Sir Tom is on a mission to get as many people as possible walking, taking, spreading hope, and easing loneliness. Due to COVID-19, there is no race track or walking group so your walk can be any kind you like. Whether it’s a five-mile hike, laps of your garden, or to the shops and back again. The Captain Tom Foundation wants to hear about it and wants you to share your journey to help spread joy and start a conversation.
We can’t wait to see what the foundation and Sir Tom gets up to next. Until then, why not enjoy a cuppa with your very own Uccello Kettle?
