Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes tenderness and pain throughout the body, this has often been referred to as widespread pain.
Those aged between 50-70 years are known to be more susceptible to developing it. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, as those younger in age have been known to get it too. A recent study carried out by Versus Arthritis shows that between 1.8 – 2.9 million people in the UK are living with Fibromyalgia.
Unlike arthritis, Fibromyalgia pain isn’t caused due to problems you have with your joints, bones, or muscles. It is believed to be caused by your nervous system (which includes your brain and spine) not being able to control the pain signals from other parts of your body.
What Are the Causes of Fibromyalgia?
Unfortunately, it is not clear why some develop the condition. The exact cause is still unknown. Extensive research has been carried out to try better understand it and the findings have found a number of factors to be involved.
Chemical Imbalance
Those living with Fibromyalgia have been linked with low levels of specific hormones in their brains. Hormones such as:
- Dopamine – the feel good hormone
- Serotonin – plays a role in our emotions, digestion, sleep and moods
- Noradrenaline – the stress hormone
Having low level of the above hormones could be a key player in causing Fibromyalgia.
Trouble Sleeping
Sleeping issues such as disturbed sleep is believed to be a cause of Fibromyalgia, rather than an actual symptom.
When we have a bad nights sleep it can actually lower our pain threshold. This is why those living with the condition have sleep issues and feel higher levels of pain.
Genetics
Research has suggested that genetics has a small role to play in the development of Fibromyalgia. It could explain why some develop the condition after experiencing a triggering factor mentioned here while others simply develop it with no explanation.
Currently Living with other Conditions
Developing Fibromyalgia can even sometimes be linked to having other conditions too. Conditions that affect your joints, muscles and bones, like rheumatic conditions.
These other conditions can be:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Lupus
